"I added Sling TV so I can get ESPN which I watch all the time.
Other than having to move my antenna around to find the right spot to get all the local channels I now have everything I watched before and NO cable bill."

"The guy at CM recommended I get the discount coupon from antennaweb.org and get a separate hard drive.  This saved me about 250 bucks by my estimation and I got the wireless adapter and extra antenna for free!  I love everything about it as it works exactly as promised.  I am hopeful that CM will continue to update with streaming sites as they become available to them or possibly add Netflix or Hulu (etc) to the lineup.  The diagnostic tools and partial scan ability is great for getting my station lineup complete even if some stations don't always come in."

"Combined with my attic-mounted digital TV antenna, I receive all of the local stations in crystal-clear HD reception (and it's sharper than what I was getting from my cable TV service).

Coupled with the on-board SlingTV app, and the Netflix & Hulu subscriptions that I have on my AppleTV (which I already had), I'm entirely free from cable TV.

Offering a little advice to other people who are thinking about cutting the cord, start with getting the right digital TV antenna first. Channel Master offers several options, and the antenna is the most crucial part of cutting the cord. Once you have the right antenna, add the DVR+ and a good external USB hard drive, and you'll never look back.

BTW, I was previously paying $160/month for my cable TV service. I now pay $34/month ($20/month for SlingTV, and $14/mo for Netflix & Hulu)."

You do not need to convert the coax to hdmi to get your channels in HD. The coax going straight to a modern TV will give you full 1080p  .

=======================

f the main cable line is hooked to the new antenna, how can one get internet service from the cable company if the cable line will now have to be hooked to the antenna?

I had an existing cable line, which had a splitter for internet and TV. It was at this connection point in the splitter, I hooked my Mohu Antenna.

 If you get your internet and cable service from the same company (like Comcast), this configuration probably won't work for you. I get my internet service from ATT, and that comes in via my phone line. However, it might be possible to use some of the cable runs for the antenna and some for the internet, if you are ready to run some new lines where they need to go. I actually have the antenna feed running from the attic down through the cable line to the basement, and from there, I have a couple of other coax lines running to my other 2 TVs. Where the cable line comes in from outside, I have sent that back up to the cable converter to be able to watch and record the couple of cable shows I want to watch. It was a bit complicated and time consuming to do all this, but in the end it was worth it.

"We've used a rotating roof antenna for years at our house, which is within 3 blocks of Kaiser Hospital.
It's not a huge antenna, but it's up fairly high. We have a
Channel Master Rotator, $89, (see far below) which we operate with a remote control, which allows us to receive San Francisco and Sacramento stations. We get a lot of channels!

We use a Zenith receiver(discontinued, (see the "DVR+" below) with about 8 hours of memory (16gb) to record shows if needed.
Picture quality is excellent with an
antenna; the only drawback is that you occasionally get reception problems when the weather is very turbulent. It hasn't been much of a problem for us as it's usually temporary and we're usually streaming video anyway." (see SLING, VUDU and USB WIFI Adapter below)

"Has a good tv guide from ROVI . Must be connected to  wifi or ethernet.. Then there is the streaming internet channels Pandora, You tube, Sling, if you subscribe, plus others.   I like the internet stations but would like to be able to record internet programs." You would think you could do that with the USB WIFI Adapter($39)? But the FTC says "NO" !

  1. Check to see if the digital channels in your area broadcast on the UHF or VHF band.  If the Affiliate channels are for high-frequency VHF stations (Channels 7 – 13), you will need a VHF antenna. Check out our ClearStream 1V, ClearStream 2V or ClearStream 4V HDTV antennas based on their range. For UHF (Channels 14 - 51), you will receive crystal clear reception with any of our other antennas.
  2. Determine how far will your antenna be from the transmitters. Look at the column heading in dark blue showing the distance in miles (mi) and choose your antenna based on the farthest transmitter from your location.
  3. You might need a uni-directional or multi-directional antenna. In some cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, all stations are broadcast from one central area; the Empire State and GE Buildings in New York, the Sears Tower or Hancock Building in downtown Chicago, and Mt. Wilson in Los Angeles. In other cities like St. Louis, the transmitters are scattered around the city. Check the Black markers on the map, and if all of your desired stations are transmitting from the same area or within 20° of each other, you can use a uni-directional antenna: Check out the Element Uni-directional long range antenna. If the transmitters are positioned more than 20° apart, it is best to use a multi-directional antenna. All of our antennas indicate whether they are a uni-directional or multi-directional antenna.

HDTV antenna setup that pulls in 82 channels, even with the TerraLinda/Sleepy Hollow ridge parked in front of the house. Our monthly Comcast bill had amounted to over $160. By cutting the cable, the bill dropped by $100.  It took a lot of trial and error, and research to get this right, so here is what we did:

Materials:
Denny’s Stacker Antenna -- http://dennysantennaservice.com/hd_stack...
Antenna Parts Outlet – Eave Mount -- http://www.antennapartsoutlet.com/Pages/...
5 foot mast and 100’ of RG6 coaxial cable -- Purchased at Electronics Plus on 4th Street.

You might have different results, but I’d recommend the Denny’s Stacker for TerraLinda, as I did try smaller outdoor and indoor antennas, with varying results. NBC was problematic for us, as its broadcast is from San Bruno Mountain, which is further away than Mt. Sutro. This setup seems to fix this.

When you install, use the compass on your phone and point the antenna to 150 degrees SE. That is about the direction of Sutro Tower from TerraLinda.

==========================================================

Our first try was the RCA 751R, which is 35 bucks on Amazon. It was ok, but missed NBC. That will help set expectations of what you can or can't pick up if you go to a larger antenna. There are also reception websites that give you signal strength based on zip code. But TerraLinda can vary by where you are. One thing I do want to mention is that the project came in, parts and labor, at under 500 bucks. So that's why it makes sense to experiment with something cheap to set expectations.

=========================================================

This shows compass direction to Sacramento stations is about 74deg.

We live deep in Sleepy Hollow and get the stations on a bounce off of the big hill between Sleepy Hollow and Terra Linda. Yes, the antenna is pointing the wrong way, but it works 95% on the SF stations except channel 11 which is only about 60%. This is with a high-end channel master antenna. Pointed at Mt. Sutro we have 0% reception.

It was rather amazing. I was real frustrated after installing the antenna and receiving 2 Sacramento stations and some misc. UHF stations with zero local VHF stations. Then, while rotating the antenna, I found the sweet spot pointed at the hill. 2, 4 and 5 are close to 100%. Channel 11 seems to be affected by temp. inversions and sometimes gets iffy. My antenna is only on a 3' mast and barely clears the ridge line of the roof.

======================================================

I am a retired Commercial Dealer for DirecTV and applaud you on the work you had done. You must live in a sweet spot to be able to pick up over the air HDTV signal from both Sutro and San Bruno. Couple of things to be aware of -
1) Never use white RG-6 Coaxial cable outdoors. White cable is not Ultraviolet protected and over time the Sun, Rain etc. will break it down. If I was to do what you did, I would have used RG-6Q in Black color. U/V protected and has a quad shield for keeping interfering signals from entering through the cable. I have heard recently that there is some white cable available that is U/V protected but I have not seen it yet.
2)  Off air looks spectacular as long as you have a good clean signal. I have compared DirecTV picture quality side by side to Comcast for many years and DirecTV wins by a mile. The picture is cleaner and there is way less pixelation.

==========================================

I use Sling TV to pick up Fox & NBC and lots of basic cable (Comedy Central, TNT, Food Network, HGTV, etc) and pay $25/month for that service. Otherwise I'm also on an antenna and am super-happy to not be paying the traditional cable companies for tons of channels I didn't watch!

=======================================================

free Kodi (http://kodi.tv/) to stream all my movies/tv shows/music to my TV. I see in the latest version of their software that they include a PVR.

see what channels you'll be able to get: http://www.antennaweb.org/

basic model TiVo Roamio (www.tivo.com $199 plus $12.50/month) works with both cable and an antenna. The higher models are cable only, for some reason.

eyetv <https://www.elgato.com/en/eyetv>. can be used as a DVR

purchased an antenna system from Walgreens and get about 30 stations loud and clear. Price was $15 in the TV section. Need an HD converter box to work for about $50.
